Frenchman leads the way in Barcelona

Dorian Boccolacci has topped the timesheets in this morning’s GP3 Series test session at the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona, taking advantage of gloriously sunny but mild conditions to claim the top spot in a qualifying style first section of the second day’s test with a lap of 1:32.896, just 0.012s ahead of Nirei Fukuzumi and Jack Aitken.

Conditions were perfect for what become a practice qualifying session, with the pace running fast and frantic for the first hour of the session. All of the drivers were on track as soon as the green flags were shown, with Boccolacci setting the first competitive lap time before sharing the top spot widely: Arjun Maini, Niko Kari, Raoul Hyman, Fukuzumi and Anthoine Hubert all spent time in P1, with the Japanese driver claiming the top spot on the hour mark, before giving way to the Frenchman a few minutes later.

With the latter two hours set to test long run pace there seemed little chance of Boccolacci losing his top spot, and so it proved: a late red flag to remove Steijn Schothorst’s stricken car from turn 5 simply ensured that no one would have enough time for a last minute glory run.

Fifteen drivers were within a second of Boccolacci’s best lap, which suggests that the first qualifying session of the season, just a few weeks away at this circuit, will be as dramatic as ever.
